What You Need To Know About Installing a Dryer Vent System at Your Fixer Upper
Hit television shows today have everyone thinking they have what it takes to turn a “fixer upper” into a dream home. And while that’s great for local communities across the country in need of some love, there are certain things when working on a house that you need to make sure you do just right in order to avoid problems down the road.
One of these elements is the dryer vent system.
Whether you are needing to move a current system, replace an existing system, or build a new system entirely, the following principles should always be followed to make sure that your dryer vent works properly.
1. All of the dryer hoses you use for your venting system need to be at least four inches in diameter. Anything smaller can lead to frustrating and potentially dangerous clogs. Aluminum transition hoses are by far the safest and most durable - avoid using plastic or vinyl.
2. If you need to secure hose joints, only use metal tape. Trying to bridge the gap with anything else, like duct tape or masking tape, will lead to issues down the road, even if at first it seems like it’s working.
3. Never vent your dryer system out through your chimney or other exhaust systems already in place. Your dryer needs its own venting system.
While many people can successfully work on their home’s dryer vent system, it’s always best to consult with a skilled professional to make sure that it’s done properly.
